Mustang Open - 2019

During the weekend of March 2nd and 3rd, the Cal Sailing Team sent 4 boats down to Morro Bay for Mustang Open. For the first time in Mustang Open history, the fleet was split into two, making a total of 41 boats between the JV and Varsity Fleets. On Saturday the breeze came from a direction which allowed for lots of drag racing, coming over the right side of the course, making it possible to lay the first mark off the start line. Saturday also featured consistent breeze ranging from 14-20 knots with rain. UC Berkeley was winning the regatta after the first day in Varsity and JV, looking to hold on into day 2.

Sunday was another rainy day, with a very inconsistent breeze. The Race Committee was shifting the course multiple times throughout the day and provided for challenging conditions. Cal’s Skipper and Crew combo of Holden Payne 21’ and Avery Burke 19’ killed the game Sunday, finishing the regatta with a second and first place, ultimately propelling them into first place within A fleet. Overall the Bears did well at the event, with Bears 1 winning the varsity fleet and Bears 2 getting 6th. Within JV, UC Berkeley won behind the excellent scores of skippers Vincent Todosiev 19’ (fan favorite) and Augustus Doricko 22′, and their crews Cameron Juybari 19’, Paris Sato 21’, and Gregory Reich 21’. We would like to thank Karry and John MacDonald for hosting the team! Their hospitality is a major reason why we sailed well in the event!
